More aimed at the left, but a good read
…yeah…this is undeniable.
It feels good to dismiss people, to mock them, to write them off as deplorables. But you might as well take time to try to understand them, because I’m telling you, they’ll still be around long after Trump is gone.
This is basically the reason I bother to listen to conservatives. That bit in the article about rural having taken a beating is absolutely true, too. And when elites and my foolish economics professors believe people follow the jobs, that just not true for so, so many people. So, building any policy around people flocking to jobs when when their wings have been clipped since birth doesn’t fly.
Furthermore, the Democratic party does not have a rural presence. They’ve effectively abandoned rural areas to conservatives in favor of corporations and empty progressive rhetoric. So, it’s no surprise that rural areas overwhelmingly vote Republican. It’s not like voting against their interests. This is a common liberal belief that’s not true. Rural interests aren’t legislatively represented by either party. Still, Republicans talk a big rhetorical game that resonates with them.
This is one of the reasons I really do hate the Democratic party. Biden’s going on a tour about how American democracy is at risk. For who? A rural person and a poor person get fucked alike no matter who wins. What is democracy exactly when life is just a sequence of work-sleep-work-sleep?
Ooof. I’m riled up. God, I hate the Democratic party.
But you still won’t catch me dead voting for Republicans.
