Discord is kinda terrible anyway. Especially on privacy. Matrix ftw

The cool thing is that you can use a load of different apps for it. Want it to look like Discord? Use Element or Nheko. Like WhatsApp? FluffyChat. Want to use a Nintendo 3DS? Try Miitrix.
Matrix has some major issues.
- First, element call (or whatever the voice channel thing is called) is still in beta.
- second, my friends wont switch until matrix is better than discord, which will probably take very long time (this depending on who you ask is either matrix issue or friend issue)
- third, the way the rooms/servers work is too confusing, (people have to manually join the different rooms on a server, and not everything at once)
Cinny > Element on everything but the feature set.
It’s hard to beat Element in features given the special treatment it gets (by being developed by the same people that develop the spec) but look and feel wise you can absolutely improve on it.
Discord actually recently upgraded free users to 25MB uploads so this meme is out of date
The new 500MB Nitro limit still isn’t honored everywhere so it all balances out.
It’s extremely timely with Reddit and Twitter showing the risks of proprietary centralized communities like Discord.
I think you mean authoritarian not Orwellian. Orwellian would mean that they are using language to corrupt thought. Authoritarian means they are just in a position of absolute power and can abuse it
