Is there a term for this “live, laugh, love”-esque pop psych BS?
Closest would probably be toxic positivity.
Shitty guide, sometimes these obvious solutions are not an option
Right? This is on a “Depressed? Just don’t be sad!” level
Burned out and take a day off? A DAY!?
*Maniacally laughter coming from the off …*
Taking a day off? From parenthood? Back when my kids were tiny, the office was my reprieve. Then, of course, covid struck…
Easier said than done in most cases. Serious mental problems should not be simplified like this. They are complex. A list like this makes them seem trivial and easy to overcome.
That being said, some of these are helpful tools for said problems. The issue with this post is that it boils these issues down to simple problems with simple fixes.
I think this isn’t addressed to people with mental illness. It’s more of a general mental health awareness education. I worked therapy sessions and you’d be shocked by the amount of people with truly atrocious coping mechanisms because they didn’t receive healthy emotional education.
Playing video games for hours without rests, bathroom or stretch breaks. Self medicating, alcohol abuse, binging junk food at 3 am, etc. This people didn’t have a mental illness that I could diagnose directly. Usually they were just overwhelmed by life circumstances. But they were spiraling downwards because of their habits and beliefs on how to deal with the stresses of life.
We did something called mental health hygiene. And they were things just like these. Not just knowing about them, but switching attitudes and habits around them. There’s so much people that aren’t capable of identifying emotions and needs that we even give them names. People who get hangry are individuals who are easily irritated who can’t identify their hunger and it makes them reactive with aggression to almost any social stimulus. That’s not a mental illness, it is just bad mental health hygiene.
Saying to such a person “hey, I think you’re hungry and that’s making you angry and aggressive, go eat” sounds stupidly obvious. But for the person going through it, it isn’t that obvious.
Aside: the amount of times I’ve had to work sleep schedules with depressed and anxious patients is ridiculously high. People with mental illnesses do forget to sleep. And my job was telling them, “you need sleep ASAP” then work with them how to get it done. Nothing is obvious.
Yeah, I was in therapy at 27 for my ADHD, which was diagnosed fifteen years earlier, when I learned how to make an ADHD-friendly to-do list.
In those fifteen years I never thought “maybe to-do lists are so frequently recommended because they’re actually valuable” and no other therapists or mentors had thought that I might not know that to-do lists for people with ADHD are different from the ones that work for neurotypical people (my list doesn’t say “wash dishes,” it says “collect dishes from the bedroom and kitchen, soak silverware in a pot with hot water, stack plates next to the sink, soak any cookware or cups that need it, wash plates and bowls, wash silverware, wash cups, wash cookware”).
It’s so obvious in hindsight, but I felt almost condescended to when people told me to write a to-do list. Finding out not only were they right, but I need a to-do list that’s broken down into smaller steps than normal was humbling in a good way. I hope I’m less dismissive of seemingly basic ideas now.
I think if someone had seen my therapist’s notes to me and made fun of them, I might not have been able to be open to their advice. Or maybe I’d just be embarrassed about the experience, instead of grateful.
Tired --> sleep
Why didn’t I think of that?
Sadly, a lot of people think that stimulants helps with feeling tired. They rely on coffee, for example.
Overthinking -> Stop scripts
Uninspired -> Ingest spirits
Scared -> stop playing horror games
Stuck -> /unstuck
Tired -> For the love of god don’t go to sleep
Confused -> we all are, honey
Frustrated -> masturbate
Burned out -> go live on an uninhabitated island to escape society
Impatient -> annoy your surroundings
Unmotivated -> why bother?Overthinking -> sit in a forest
Uninspired -> sit in a forest
Scared -> leave the forest
Stuck -> leave the forest … for another forest
Tired -> sleep in a forest
Confused -> sit in a forest
Frustrated -> chop down a tree
Burned out -> sit in a forest
Impatient -> leave the forest … for yet another forest
Unmotivated -> sleep in a forestso true
the comments here are truly negative, maybe these tips doesn’t work for you, but some of them worked for me…
I think maybe just get rid of the bogus ones like “sleep” and “take a day off”.
Everything else you can do with a little time and effort. Most people with 30 minutes can’t opt to sleep in that time, that’d just be 30 minutes of laying down letting your brain try to make up the activity. And even fewer people can afford to say “I’m not coming in to work today”!
Totally agree 👌
I think your tips might help well on some level, but not in general. Taking for example burnout: If you are stressed or tired, then one day off sounds like a good thing to do. But a burn out is much, much more, then simply being tired. To suggest that a day off might help against a fully blown burn out is like … suggesting to consume more vitamin A to cure blindness. And it is a bit of a slap in the face of those, who suffer from earnest problems, to read, that they should just take a day off or sleep more, etc. Your tips might be good … on very low level struggles. But they are not (or so I think) the general solution for all the problems you mentioned there. This only as an explanation, why some answers seemed quite negative to you. :)
Instructions unclear. Am now unemployed. Got fired for sleeping on the job.
Thanks! I’m cured!
Oh I’m tired, so I should sleep? Phew, so glad I had this guide to help me figure that out, never would’ve occurred to me. 🙄
How about when I’m tired and anxious? Do I sleep write?
According to this I’d have to be writing at all times of day and night
I mean I get things like “frustrated -> take a walk” because that does help me, but I don’t really have the luxury to just sleep because I’m tired…
Ahhh, so that’s my problem. I’ve been doing “walk” when I should’ve been doing “sleep”.
I don’t see the option for “play video games for hours on end”, tho
Impatent?
Reapply.
I am frustrated because this meeting is an hour over time and includes no information relevant for my position.
I cant leave because the last item may invoke a single question i could answer much better in an email.
