    Explanation: Roman infantry in the era of the Republic were regarded as formidable - but more than that, the Romans had a seemingly endless reserve of men to call upon, something a great many of their enemies commented on. One ancient historian compared their troops to water gushing forth from a fountain, after Pyrrhus of Epirus had killed several thousand of them and routed their army, and then the Romans came back with more men to try again!
