What Nextcloud password manager do you use and recommend?
I am using the default namesake. I like it except for the Linux desktop client which has awful UI, no password adding or export. Passman looks good, and like NC Password it has browser ext. and an Android app - but it has no Linux desktop client at all. Authpass looks good also, but has no Nextcloud browser app. I am not sure if the desktop client can export or search passwords. It is concerning that if NC goes down that there is no local database - or one that is useful.
Any others?
Self-hosted bit warden
Great tech, but a discriminatory company. I moved from there ti NC passwords.
The code is still open source. If you’re self hosting you’re not giving them any money. And they have a very comprehensive set of tools that are also open source.
For a company in the United States, having one employee make fun of other employees pronouns is just a HR nightmare. There’s no winning. They would be in trouble if they didn’t fire that guy, they’d be in trouble if they did. So that’s just a catch-22 situation. Their biggest mistake was putting somebody with that personality into a leadership role
Ah yes, they fired a bigot. How dare they!
I’ll see if I can find a password manager created by other small-minded bigots and let you know.
There is VaultWarden, which is an independent implementation of bitwarden server. It’s easy to deploy and you got pro features normally locked in bitwarden paid subscription too.
I self host this and nextcloud both via Yunohost, makes both quite easy.
Are you talking about how they fired a transphobe, or about something else?
The fired persons logic is really weird. If pronouns are “given by god”, why can’t they just write the ones they think they were given? Really just sounds like an asshole to me and deserved to be fired (in my opinion, not legally speaking)
Yeah he was clearly itching for a fight. Saying that was definitely a provocation.
Wait, what’s this about the company?

I assume the original poster is referring to this. Basically a VP at bit warden claim their pronouns were " assigned by God". Which is making fun of everybody else who is assigning their pronouns.
This puts the bit warden organization in a no-win situation. A HR nightmare really. If they punish this person for making fun of others they get in trouble. If they don’t punish this person they also get in trouble.
A total catch 22. I think their biggest mistake was putting somebody in a leadership position who had a personality to do this. But as far as how they handled the situation after the fact they did as good as they could. I personally don’t hold it against them. They had no good options either way.
Regardless of politics, you can’t have internal employees making fun of other internal employees. That’s just a bad work environment
Thanks for the context of this! I agree, they had no good options there.
Based on your criteria, I would suggest you use something like Keepass with the DB synced via Nextcloud. This allows you access to the local DB file if NC goes offline.
Thanks. I will take a look! No NC browser app though?
Not that I’m aware of. You’d interact with the password database via another app.
Vaultwarden
Thanks for the suggestion, but this is outside the criteria set.
NC Password works well, but does require the server to be up – that can be a painpoint. Keeping an encrypted CSV/spreadsheet backup of your passwords for offline use is one option. Another option might be to see if this Linux Desktop Nextcloud app is still functional: https://gitlab.com/j0chn/nextcloud_password_client
Yes, but an encrypted spreadsheet (which I have) is always going to be old. The NC client is terrible! You have to change the theme every time to read the text. You cannot add a new password, search or export the db.
I am now looking at Keeweb! Is there an Android Keepass compatible app to complement it?
KeepassDX
Thanks! I will check it out!
Ok, what a few crazy days exploring options!
Keeweb deb would not install. The appimage did! Keeweb Nextcloud installed.
Keeweb desktop could import my csv export (but displayed it incorrectly) The app would not connect to Nextcloud. It turns out the project has been unmaintained for over 2 years.
I could export a backup from keeweb desktop a kdbd file for the keepass profile though. I opened the desktop backup in Keeweb Nextcloud. Both desktop app and browser look great - but do not communicate.
I then uploaded the kdbx file to Nextcloud files.
Exploring other apps I found Authpass desktop and Android app to be the best. There is no automatic sync however. This has to be triggered manually from whatever app you are on.
After trying to activate the Nextcloud file kdbx for Nextcloud Keeweb I eventually managed to click in the right place. So now I had the desktop, cloud and phone working together, well, when manually triggered that is!
Now to sort out the wrong formatting! After installing many app and messing about with python scripts I could not get the data fields right. Keepass2 app suppose to have an import function. It was greyed out. I uninstalled it, but later came back when I learnt that you needed to create a database first before importing onto it! I chose a Bitwarden json - and it worked!
Ok, going well! Now I just need a browser extension! Fail! None could grep the kdbx file from Authpass or Nextcloud! At least none that could create passwords! This is actually my main point of interaction with passwords. An essential component.
So, I have actually ended backup where I started - using Nextcloud Passwords! I cleared up one annoyance sort of. That was, that every time I used biomemetrics to open the Android app it then also asked me TWICE to enter my password! I switched to pin and I only have to enter it once.
The Nextcloud desktop app, which is actually still a work in progress, is the only sore point. It opens tiny and the geometry cannot be set as it does not use the KDE window rules. The UI is awful and I need to go to settings - themes to change the theme in order to see the text. There is no search or export/backup. It is near useless at this point. Hopefully it will develop!
If only they would fork Keeweb desktop! It is full featured and beautiful! More beautiful than all the other Keepass apps and better looking that Bitwarden also.
nb.I never got to test out Passman.
How you can have so many problems? Nextcloud, Keeweb desktop in linux with webdav storage to Nextcloud, Keeweb Firefox extension and Keepass2Android work flawlessly and easy to setup.
Keepass2Android is very good. Been using it quite a long time now. Also Keeweb and browser plugin is a way to go.
I use passman in nextcloud with the android app on my phone and browser extension on my laptop. Can’t complain , it just seems to work. Although for auto filling passwords on phone the app needs to be (recently) active.
Thanks for the field report! Good to know!
Lesspass.
Thanks, however I cannot find anything about integration with Nextcloud! Could you provide a link please?
