Literally on the front page, wtf
Like what does being gay have to do with their crimes?
Just use “Two men sentenced to life imprisonment for sexual abuse of children”
This feels like covert agenda-posting
I suppose it adds some context. They aren’t separate adoptive dads who’ve cooperated to abused their respective sons, neither did the state allow an adoption to two single straight men living together- that they’re a gay couple explains the situation.
I’m glad they threw in the words sick and horrific otherwise I might have thought this wasn’t so bad, phew. That they described them as gay dads doesn’t bother me though. For me it just brings up how difficult it is to ensure children’s safety at home no matter the family type.
It has everything to do with their crime? Your “just use …” misrepresents the crime, when family sexually abuse adopted child. These aren’t two unrelated men.
nothing in your comment is related to being gay, it’s all about being a family/couple
I’m with you on the fact that missing the family parts kinda does misrepresents the atrocity, but it’s not the gay part that can bring it up, it’s the family one
As other said, it would be more appropriate to say “couple” or “dads” than “gay dads” imo
Would you have rather it said “pedophiles adopt and rape children” or “government fails to protect children despite background checks on potential adoptive parents and dragnet surveillance”?
I suppose I’ve never seen “straight married couple does evil act” it’s just “married couple does evil act”
YUP.
The average redditor used to be center left (liberal) but now it feels like its going to the right.
That’s not how that works
And redditors who post homophobic stuff like this wonder why they get banned…
How is this homophobic?
Oh we literally had someone complaining about the opposite issue with a headline yesterday.
There does seem to be a non-trivial difference there though. In one the article is failing to state the orientation of the victims which was a motivating factor for the attacks, in the other it is suggesting that the orientation of the accused is a cause of their criminal behavior.
Minimize and demonize are what bring those two articles together.
A very good point, and one I wish I had included in my response.
Was the motivating factor that the victims were gay or that they were seeking sex with minors? It isn’t entirely clear, but the trend that kicked it off seems to have been pedo-bashing.
