Not member yet of any of those community, but I will join the playstation one, I want to just say it’s great you keep c/ps5 opens. I seen merger been done much more agressively.

Yeah, The point was not to shut down c/PS5 but instead to have everyone go to PlayStation while the lemmy community is still small. Keep in mind the ps5 community voted for this along with the PlayStation community. Both communities agreed to the merge and this wasn’t strictly a mod decision.

We mods have limited bandwidth so this change is mainly a change to where we will be seeding content. As the lemmy community grows, there will be more need for breakout communities like PSX, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, etc. But as it stands now, PS5 was the only active community due to us mods diligently seeding content. We were originally unaffiliated with c/PlayStation as the old mods were interested in keeping that for PS4 and backward consoles only. The PS5 community actually predates the PlayStation community. Anyway, now that we are in control of both, we think it’s best to focus our efforts on PlayStation, while allowing PS5 to stay open for the community to use.

A lot of people are concerned that PS5 news is going away. This is NOT the case. PS5 news will be a mainstay pillar of the PlayStation community. The same volume of content that you’re used to seeing on c/PS5 will be on c/PlayStation now. The change is primarily semantic, but it opens up opportunities for us down the line. For example, when PlayStation 6 comes out, we won’t have to build a new community from scratch to accommodate it. Also, by centralizing content on one community, we can have a better quality of discussion take place.

If you take a look at [email protected], that is what it will be like. That community is primarily focused on Nintendo Switch while not having to be c/NintendoSwitch, which would limit them down the line.
