Ik that trams are not always full but even if they are only 1/3 full they still fit more people than 5 lane road of the same lenght. They are much more environmentally friendly too.
We absolutely need more trams but this image is slightly misleading as it assumes all the cars are going to the same place as the tram - integrated transport networks are really complex and I worry that if we try to gloss over those complexities it’ll make it harder to convince people to take it seriously
Replace the tram with a bus and you get the same thing driving everywhere the road is. And if you look at the name of the sub you will see that it’s not like we are agains ALL cars, only most of them. Cars are way to go for some edge scenarios that can’t be accomplished even with a very good public transport and micromobility.
Edit: and why would the average person need to care about complexity of public transport? All they need to do is to get on the ride and get where they need to be.
I don’t see this as a popular solution anymore. It doesn’t address the issue of transfers and the last mile problem. Autonomous rides hare vehicles seems like the next logical step. When enough vehicles are autonomous we can double travel speed and increase safety by 10fold.
Autonomous vehicles still take up a lot of space, and with more public transit stops, the last mile becomes the last 100 yards, which you can easily walk. Or if it really is a mile, you can hop on a shared bike or escooter.
Or even better, trams with dedicated space for bicycles so you can take your bicycle wherever you want.
