Nothing special, just wanted to make a post because I’m extremely proud of myself today. Reddit was the only thing holding me back, and I’m happy to say that I’ve just deleted my 8 year old account. I’m now only using open source apps for my android and desktop OS and it feels amazing!

What about the CPU and RAM?

This is interesting actually and a good point. But surely they don’t pose a big security or privacy breach risk? I’m fairly uneducated in this field.

We’re just poking for a bit of fun. The Free and Open Source rabbit hole goes very deep. For example, Intel and AMD processors have code on them that isn’t free meaning the purists will not use them unmodified.

Everyone has a threshold where privacy and freedom interfere with convenience, just stick with the level you’re comfortable with.

No joke, I briefly looked into whether it would be possible to fabricate my own PCBs. I’m quite handy with soldering and MIGHT be okay placing my chips.

Turns out it is possible, but not at the board density we enjoy. The time and cost of materials also make it unreasonable.

The board isn’t the issue, the CPU and RAM have firmware running on them.

Oh, then OP will most likely need to replace their hardware with something like Framework, as I can’t see x86-64 becoming open.

          Baby steps are okay too.

I was going to press you on the firmware for the CPU, but I was unaware that CPU microcode exists and is built to live in the cache.
