Getting a REAL ID is not that easy - I got turned away when I tried (despite having a passport? it was confusing?) so I had to go with a non compliant one.
(Of course, as a trans person, I’m mega fucked when it’s time to renew. Hopefully things are sane again by 2028/I don’t lose my DL in between now and then.)
I’m sorry that happened to you.
We’ve had REAL ID here in Wyoming for at least a decade and even for my wife it was pretty straightforward; she just had to show Birth Certificate and Marriage License to prove the name change and she was done. That was at least two drivers licenses ago (ours expire every 5 years) and she’s had no trouble with renewal.
I’m going to guess you ran into trouble because you are trans in Oklahoma and they didn’t like the gender change?
It was more to do with my last name being changed when I was married I think? I had no idea. I’ve got a passport at least, so I can still fly for now.
Oklahoma fought Real ID. Part of why enforcement keeps getting pushed back - for some reason. We don’t like it when the government tells us to do anything here. (It’s like pathological demand avoidance - “I thought you wanted more secure IDs so that illegals can’t have drivers licenses?” “Not if you’re making me 😠”)
