    From Wikipedia:

“Wake Me Up When September Ends” was written by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong about his father, who died from esophageal cancer when Armstrong was 10 years old. Armstrong at one point dubbed the song the most autobiographical he had written to that point, considering it “therapeutic” but also difficult to perform.

      Also from Wikipedia:

“Armstrong has expressed his displeasure with the memes and has joked about wanting to write a sequel song in response called ‘Shut the Fuck Up When October Comes’.”

Yeah imagine performing a song about how hard it is to remember the anniversary of the most heartbreaking death of a loved one you’ve experienced, and then everybody makes a joke about reminding you of it for the next several decades.

Alt: imagine being a public figure famous music band and not have the internet not make jokes about your songs

Not saying it can’t affect him and his past trauma, but like… not everyone knows or cares about your lore, famous rock star

Nah man, you gotta think strategically. You move to Honolulu, and find an acquaintance in Kiribati. They give you through the stock movements from the future, and you buy/sell in the past!

You guys are being silly. Obviously that doesn’t work because the speed of light limits how fast that call can come through. By the time you get the information the stock will have already moved.

Maybe he meant he wanted to be awake to see September end. Like a New Year’s Countdown.

You know what’s much less funny after all these years? People insisting on going out of their way to yuck on everybody’s yum.

I mean we probably shouldn’t laugh at a song that was about him coping with his father’s death.

Kinda like the whole loss meme. You’re making a joke out of a devastating traumatic experience.

Nope. I’d agree if the joke was about the content or context of the song, but it isn’t.

It’s just a silly joke about the title and has nothing to do with anything else.

To most of us it’s about the time passing and the innocent never lasting (which I always assumed is a similar idea to “why do the good people always go first”.).

That being said, if we stop joking about serious matters and just take everything seriously - whether it’s intended like that or not - we’re fucked.

No, I’d much rather someone completely misconstrued what I said, missed the point entirely and tried to take all the fun out of yet another array of jokes.
