nerd Akshually, the high organic matter content, anaerobic conditions, and high acidity means that bogs tend to be pretty nutrient poor, requiring plants to develop unusual adaptations such as insectivory to meet their nitrogen requirements. The reducing environment is so strong in some bogs that iron can precipitate out of the soil solution, forming masses known as “bog iron” that were probably the source of the earliest worked iron implements! The fact that they can consume military vehicles whole is just one of many awesome features of bogs.
