1990s Windows Update is back!
Internet Explorer 5 or higher required 😄
But why though. I understand some folks might have a need to run an old OS, but why are you even thinking about attaching them to the internet?
I’m not sure. But as this is retrocomputing, I think “because we can” is often a good enough reason for people to make old things work again :)
Because it’s fun and sometimes just has to be done 😂
Because manually downloading and installing the updates might require too much manual intervention, I guess.
And this would, I assume, save you the trouble of figuring out which updates you need.
A nice surprise! I’ll have to test this with a Windows 95 laptop in a bit.
5 years ago I was called out to a company in Sydney, Australia that ran some mail (paper!) processing software on a machine running Windows 98. They sent out big numbers of lottery tickets around the world.
Another one was a textile manufacturing company running Windows 95. The systems were attached to the internet not because they wanted them to be, but because the admins didn’t have the networking skills to split up the network like that.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they ran some of these online updates on those systems.
Nuke it from the orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
