I’m interested as hell, but I live in a country where all the cool new stuff never shows up (Malaysia) until it’s too late.

I’ll be back in a few years

Is there a reason they’re only offering AMD CPUs and GPUs? Why don’t they offer Intel and Nvidia as well?

Additional options are likely to come later. For their Laptop 13, they started with Intel and now have AMD options.

The full AMD version for the Laptop 16 is the result of a partnership with AMD in the Advantage program which means AMD was involved in the design and tuning of this system which makes sense for a CPU and GPU combo laptop.

With swappable GPUs it would make perfect sense to follow up with Nvidia options in addition to future GPUs from either company.

The Laptop 13 also allows for the motherboard+CPU combo to be replaced both to upgrade but also to switch between an Intel and AMD option. It’s quite a feature.

Framework is super tiny. They had to pick one, and only one, GPU to engineer the boards with. I also think they plan to sell maybe 10,000 of them. I doubt they can even get nvidia to call them back for an OEM batch of 4070 laptop chips at that quantity.

Probably the same reason they only offered Intel on the first two generations of the 13 inch laptop: they’re a small company and couldn’t afford to do more than one motherboard and GPU. If the 16 inch laptop takes off like the 13 inch did, I would expect them to expand their offerings in either the next generation or the one after.

Framework right now is a tiny company. And, Nvidia probably laughed at them when they asked for only 10,000 MODULAR GPU cards with say, 3060Ti’s on them. Because, Nvidia used to be a big proponent of the MMX card form factor, and then killed it like, 2 generations ago.

And, AMD partnered with them for the AMD Advantage program for the Framework 16"
