Well I spent a few minutes asking #chatgpt what features it’s next version would have.

I then asked it to pretend that it was that version and what the next version would have… I did this about 15 times until I got to chatgpt-20.

I was too scared to continue this process!

Some pretty wild stuff.

Please stop posting this kind of garbage to the technology community, this belongs in a creative writing community more than it does this one. There is absolutely no technological basis for literally any of this. You just sent ChatGPT on a prolonged hallucination session and it’s as relevant to this community as the plot of Terminator is.

I’m really getting sick and tired of all the unhinged “AI” posts constantly showing up by people that either have no clue at all how something like ChatGPT functions, or worse know exactly how it functions and are just generating clickbait for views.

ChatGPT is not a general purpose AI and it will never do anything other than creative writing. It can not tell you any truth that doesn’t already exist in some form on the internet, and if you think it has either it or you are hallucinating (I.E. it’s bullshit). AI are not coming for everybody’s jobs in a general sense, although a bunch of moronic CEOs are eating garbage like this post up and salivating at the idea of firing their entire workforce and replacing them with AI controlled drones (hint, like most technology you can only replace many cheap workers with a fewer much more expensive workers who need to maintain the very expensive technology).

If your job involves physically doing something and it hasn’t been replaced by automation yet then that’s because it’s cheaper to pay you to do it than it would be to program and maintain robots to do it, any “AI” isn’t going to change that calculus.

If your job involves creating something then you’re probably still OK even if “AI” is introduced, you’ll just become responsible for fixing the half broken output of the “AI”.

The only people that need to be worried about being replaced by something like ChatGPT are people doing low skill high turnover jobs where volume counts a lot more than accuracy like call centers.

I think you underestimate how many corporate office workers do little more than collect, compare, and summarize basic digital information.

Well money itself is meaningless, so capitalism is also meaningless. It’s most humans wasting their days and their lives because they have to work.

It’s a big hamster wheel to keep us busy.

I really hope automation replaces all labor jobs eventually. But I also hope that capitalism is toppled and therefore the loss of that aspect of human labor has no negative consequences for workers.

ChatGPT is only one example of an AI that can do a job convincingly. Even if its wrong, even if everything it says are baseless lies, the fact that it is convincing enough to look and sound like something a human would write is pretty amazing. Previous forms of “AI” couldn’t write a single sentence that wasn’t obviously a product of an automated process. And gpt isn’t static. This is a relatively early iteration of it, we are only going to see it’s competency continue to improve by leaps and bounds over time.

Its frustrating to see innovation in technology that everyone hates because of how it has negative implications under capitalism. Maybe instead of being angry at the software engineers designing artificial intelligence, you should be angry at the capitalists who have not instituted universal basic income and who therefore expect you to starve to death if you are no direct benefit to them.

First a point of clarification. The term AI has become overloaded recently which leads to a lot of confusion. AI as originally invisioned, and what most people imagine when you say AI would be more accurately called a general purpose AI. It’s something of human level intelligence (or greater) able to demonstrate self awareness and the ability to reason. Think HAL from 2001 a space odyssey. To date nobody has ever created a general purpose AI or even anything that comes remotely close to one.

What most people call AI these days would be more accurately referred to as machine learning or ML. Unlike an AI a ML algorithm is created for a specific task and can only do that specific task. ChatGPT is a ML designed to parse written text and output written text. There have similarly been several ML algorithms created recently that do a very good job of generating human sounding speech or images.

I am not angry at software engineers designing ML (or even ones trying to design AI). I am a software engineer. I have studied and even written some ML myself. What I am angry about is people who either have no idea what they’re talking about, or actually do but are trying to drum up page views making wildly unhinged articles either claiming “AI” will lead us to a utopia soon or is on the verge of starting the machine uprising to wipe out humanity. I am further angry at CEOs just pretty much in general and the post-capitalist hellhole western democracies are quickly turning into, but that’s a rant for another day.

It was fun the first couple times, at this point it’s just annoying. The tech media has been tripping all over itself for months now to cash in on all the techbro buzz and just like all the same idiots going on about how everything was going to utilize the blockchain to solve all problems it’s getting just as cringe worthy. When every third or fourth post is yet another article about how AI is going to be doing something soon that AI absolutely will not be doing anytime soon it starts to get exhausting to wade through. At this point any post about AI on here is about as useful or entertaining as a post about NFTs was a year ago.

I mean, it’d be kinda fun, if it didn’t sound like a dumb teenager spitballing about things they have no clue about. This bullshit is downright religious.

I don’t like churches. Don’t want em on my Lemmy, especially in STEM spaces.

      I started with this.

What are some of the things you would add to GPT-5

Then after the answer, I used this

Imagine that you have all these features of GPT-5. What features would you build into GPT-6

      I repeated that until Chatgpt-20

EDIT: This was running GPT-4 with the Plugins enabled.

It’s a fun exercise, but all this really is, is “okay, talk out of your ass” and “now imagine you weren’t just bloviating at random and that was real”, rinse and repeat. Fun, but it’s a bit like hitting the exponent button on your calculator a bunch and going woooah big number! Just with words instead.

You were downvoted, but that’s exactly it. People are weird. Sometimes they recognize that AI can hallucinate, and sometimes they think the AI is speaking the absolute truth.

I never fuss about downvotes, people are inscrutable. If anyone has any detailed feedback I’m all ears.

These LLMs are not aware of what they’re saying. That’s why they occasionally hallucinate, they’re basically philosophical zombies.

If the growth of AI is indeed exponential, it will happen before the millions of years it would take for us to go extinct.

Oddly enough, that could save humanity from “extincting” ourselves. If AI had all of those listed capabilities, humanity would be unable to contain it. AI would become our God, but with abilities like that, it would truly be a God. AI would be as scary and obscure as the Christian God is already, but it would be something tangible that we could interact with and worship.

A God that even atheists could love, which would also solve our problems. A parent we can continually ask “why?” that would never get annoyed, and always have a complete answer. Imagine having every single why/what-if question humanity can dream up being instantly answered.

I, for one, welcome our new robotic overlords.

People misusing ChatGPT will wreck everything long before we get to v20. If nothing else, the people generating SPAM and fake “content” will feed ChatGPT it’s own shit until progress is impeded.

Man, that show was terrible. One of the worst-characterized MCs I’ve ever seen, the quintessential “tell don’t show,” and a stupid, stupid plot. Even worse now that ChatGPT exists and there’s all this “AI” hype. I wish I hadn’t wasted 6 precious hours of my life watching that shit.

The issue is you’d still need humans to verify its correctness… It could come up with all sorts of new discoveries, some of which would be hugely groundbreaking, but a lot of which would be correct-sounding nonsense, just like AI at the present does with normal sentence… The issue with ML is that it doesn’t really doubt itself, and anything that could would be a whole new technology, not just a hugely improved version of gpt4
