12·15 hours agoIf Nintendo hasn’t made more money selling emulated video games than anyone else I would be surprised.
(virtual console, NSO, (s)nes mini, pokemon stadium, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, etc)
If they claimed emulation was illegal they would be a laughing stock. Of course it all comes down to the IP rights and copy protection measures.

New Year Deals is a strange name to choose for the second half of January!
Keeping an internet facing service online is unfortunately expensive if you want to keep it patched.
The need to migrate to a new OS every few years to keep the security updates going does force them to weight the pros and cons periodically.
I don’t like it happening but I can see how they can decide to pull the plug.

I’ve never heard of EFGAMP, have they weighed in on the Stop Killing Games campaign?
If two platforms share compatibility then developers can choose to target the weaker system and release on both.
For some games this might involve a bit of compromise and cause resentment with the owners of the more powerful system, but for other (simple) games it might not involve any compromise at all.
Either way there are a lot of Switch consoles in the wild and there will be some publisher support for the Switch for a few years yet.
As an example from the other side of the fence ps4 is still getting titles:
Any platform that offers transferable digital licenses will get a lot of customer loyalty but is likely to have mainstream publishers boycott it.
It could be structured so that everybody wins e.g. the purchaser pays less than the “new” price, with their payment then split as cash for the original publisher and store credit for the seller.
That way:
- the purchaser gets a discount
- the publisher gets a cut of the sale
- the seller gets credit to spend on new games,
- the platform gets that credit spent on their store (plus any additional money that might be required to complete a purchase)
As a customer I would find that attractive but I think most publishers would consider it a slippery slope.

2·4 days agoA single copy of the Internet Archive library collection occupies 145+ Petabytes of server space – and we store at least 2 copies of everything).
Runs with DOXBox-X and DOSBox (0.74-2 or earlier). ScummVM has an issue where loading a saved game loads with missing text boxes.
This is great as a proof of concept but I would consider scummvm compatibility a hard requirement for me these days.
