I took an Epics course in college and yeah, it’s all pretty shit. It has to be understood that the way people of the time heard it is not the way we read it today. At the time it would have been traveling storytellers who can make things much more interesting. Reading them on paper is pretty bad. The quality of these stories is far overblown. They are talked about as if they’re the peak of human storytelling ability, but they really aren’t.
As a comparison, the professor of that course also said Battlestar: Galactica is essentially The Odyssey in space, but it is entertaining all the way through. Just watch it instead.
