The introduction of the whole squad gameplay system in BF2 has really been taken to its apex by uh… Squad.

When we were gameplay testing and prototyping everything in PR days, we really wanted to make actually working as a functional squad a fundamental aspect of the gameplay, and this turned out to be pretty difficult to do starting from basically a realism mod in BF2 back in 04 and 05.

Lots of people really love being able to just do those ludicrous ‘battlefield moment’ type things of taking a jet, covering it with c4, flying it into a tank (directly), bailing out before hand, parachuting and then capping a flag or something like that.

While this is fun, it seriously clashes with realism, and also the problem becomes that everyone was still trying to top the score board individually, running off on their own with really good vehicles that could actually help the team win the game just so they could get a personally better KDR.

Squad kind of says fuck you to that in a lot of ways. Many specialist kits are only accessible either at the home base you spawn at, or at basically a pile of backpacks that the squad leader can spawn every so often, or at a forward operating base you and your team actually have to build.

The squad leader pile of bags thing is meant to represent soldiers taking off all their rucksacks and lightening their load, checking their weapons and such before an assault. The squad leader can only spawn this when they are surrounded by other squad members, and the overall number of specialist kits is limited per team. This way you can have a relatively realistic amount of snipers and heavy guided anti tank equipped soldiers, while the majority are basically very slighlty specialized versions of a standard rifleman.

Its fairly common in Squad for there to be specialist squads, usually geared toward being say a single tank crew, or a few helicopter pilots that focus on either transporting troops or providing close air support.

Vehicles in Squad have a dramatically increases spawn time compared to standars Battlefield games, so it is actual worthwhile to take one out, and it is also worth retreating and repairing instead of losing one for half the battle.

Oh right! While any soldier can say man a machine gun turret or mounted MG, you have to be a specialized driver or pilot kit to use tanks and helis and fixed wing craft. This is both realistic and functions to prevent any random soldier wasting a vehicle, and also makes you… basically much more inclined to keep your vehicle alive, because if you pop out of it, you will almost certainly be outgunned by any other soldiers.

Now I am not going to say the community of Squad is perfect, but it is generally far, far more oriented toward actual teamwork and following the chain of command, and a lot of the players whove been doing it for a while actually enjoy taking newbies along amd teaching them the ropes.

Probably do not grab a helicopter and immediately crash it, or be a squad leader when you have no idea how to do that, that’ll probably still get you yelled at.
