If history is anything to go by, you need to have these more extreme groups to move the Overton Window allowing other, gentler, groups to be engaged. Suffragists & Suffragettes. MLK & the Black Panthers. Northern Ireland required the IRA. Not that the IRA was engaged but their presence meant that other groups would be engaged. Most people disagree with PETAs methods, but their presence means that animal welfare groups are engaged. Someone has to be the “bad cop”.
