You can cheese him?!?
Well, sorta, iirc. You still need to be vigilant and not get combo-ed, but you can get into a very chill rhythm where he won’t be hyper aggressive and won’t make too many different attacks. You essentially trade blows 1-1: you swing once > deflect, he swings once > you deflect etc. He won’t use any other attacks unless you break out of that rhythm. Been a minute that I fought him, though, so I might be misremembering things

Haha no worries, when I hear “cheesing” I think of really stupid shit like killing one of the dark souls bosses from outside the boss arena by shooting him through a crack with poison arrows. I can definitely beat this guy normally but would have been shocked to find out there’s a way to do something like that. I think I cheesed something else in Sekiro, some guy that shoots at you with a rifle. I killed him via poison and blocking him from with the umbrella shield. Had to go back on the second run and do it the right way cause I didnt feel like I truly beat the game otherwise.

That sounds right, I think I was in a cave in a swampy area. Its been awhile, hard to remember exactly. Probably a good enough reason for a fresh play through haha
Their are strategies that make the fight significantly easier. Like charging the fire umbrella with his special attacks and countering. Sometimes he will spam the lightning attack in the last phase making it trivial.
IDK about straight cheese, though I remember seeing a Youtuber trick him to fall off the cliff.
I feel like at one point in a blind rage I tried knocking him off the cliff. Couldnt do it, but fucking hell he can definitely boot me off!
