Good news, medical science has discovered this great hack technique to ween yourself off Reddit successfully!
So far it’s had 100% success rate in all patients (me) who’ve had the treatment and you can do it easily in your own home too. The treatment is based on the Ludovico Technique where if you try to interact with Reddit in any way your body and mind will completely reject it.
The steps are as follows:
- Uninstall Reddit Enhancement Suite from your browser
- Set Reddit to Light mode if it isn’t already
That’s it!
The blinding white interface will readily induce extreme nausea and quickly train your eyes and brain to reject Reddit from your life. Furthermore, the lack of decent functionality and the tags you’ve given to obvious trolls and shills will make you want to jump out of the nearest window. It’s fantastic.
Also, if you decide after a few days you can push though the pain: don’t worry. After the detox period, the post quality between Lemmy and Reddit becomes self-evident. The click bait “engagement” content you were slowly introduced to will smack you over the head like a moist trout. Your eyes will assuredly be ready to explode from the light by that stage too and the pain of it all can only be relieved by deleting the Reddit bookmark from your browser.
All in all it’s a great technique and I wish you luck in your journey of staying sober too.

Thanks for reading my shitpost.
My plan is to let Apollo kick me out, then place Memmy in the spot it used to occupy. Let the muscle memory work for me
That’s what I did! Put the kbin “app” in the same spot ‘rif is fun’ app used to be in.
This is also a fantastic discovery and the medical profession of addicted internet shitposters thanks you for your contribution to science.
What did it for me was actually a link that let me see which of my posts or comments were removed without me knowing. So many of them are gone, and I didn’t even know. It feels pointless trying to interact somewhere where I’ll just be shut down and walled off and I don’t even know why.
I just wish Lemmy/kbin had an app, and was more intuitive to use
I don’t know about iOS, but there’s a few apps out there on Android. I’ve used Connect for Lemmy and Liftoff, Liftoff is a bit more functional at this point.
Couldn’t find liftoff on Google play so I got connect. I wish there was a darkness setting between dark and AMOLED but I’ll make it work. Thanks!
It supports markdown, which is cool, and super helpful for transcribing
You forgot: only use new reddit, that should be enough to make anyone vomit.
Unfortunately, that crosses a clear ethical line where we intend on doing no actual harm to people.
I just switched to Lemmy as my methadone-like substitute drug. I’m still an addict, but with a less destructive drug.
Not gonna work for me…I never installed any enhancement tools and I was using the default blinding white ‘new’ Reddit web version…at least you’re thinking in the right direction 💪😁
I’m afraid to inform you that your behaviors appear to actually just be masochist in nature and you should report to the nearest mental health facility asap.
Ah, yes… the good ol’ Touché Grassë.
Haha! I have never used Reddit without those tools so this will help me detox for sure.
The tools people have created and used to cope with Reddit are simply amazing. It’s such a shock to see how badly the user experience has been neglected over the years in favor of the dumpster fire that “new” Reddit is.
I tried, tried to use old reddit. With RES, without RES, using all the recommended settings, tweaking it to my liking… I just couldn’t. It’s so ugly. I wanted to get into reddit before, but I could only do so when new reddit was launched, and I couldn’t believe I was browsing the same website. It’s a reason why I’m loving kbin.social over other fediverse alternatives.
For me, the site already went downhill, and I’m only keeping my account there as a placeholder for my own username. It’s sometimes funny to see various, usually porn-related bots following me.
Even more effective: just go cold turkey by getting banned for “report abuse” after reporting one too many obvious repost and astroturf bots. It worked for me.
Alternatively you can just browse a few communities related to your favorite hobbies and the everpresent toxicity will detox you on the spot.
This worked wonders for me an I won’t bother even if I’m desperate.
I simply use Reddit to Wayback Machine addon.
This is not a bad idea until Google catches on, makes some kind of federated leaching system and sucks everything in from the Fediverse.
Why does everyone but me hate light mode?
If you try dark mode for a while then go back to light mode it feels blinding. IME light mode is prettier, but dark mode is more practical.
It’s not just you, I find dark mode to be uncomfortable most of the time. The big exception is I set my kindle to dark mode for reading in bed without any lights on.
