Published today on OPB, the following article covers a recent mass die off of trees in the pacific northwestern United States. Douglas fir trees in Oregon are dying off due to drought and heat.

Fir boring beetles have exploded in population, mainly recycling dead wood into soil. Unfortunately there is some friendly fire, and healthy trees end up getting devoured too.

Another concern is the hazardous tree removals. As has been reported elsewhere, some perfectly healthy and safe trees are being logged (clear cut in some areas). The contractors and the government both make a pretty penny, whilst local residents get a bald ass landscape. Its a really mutually beneficial relationship if ya ask me.

Collapse related because climate, insects and greedy loggers are rapidly destroying PNW forests. At the end of the article, one of the people interviewed says he’s confident we can save the forests. Before ending on a high note, about halfway up the page, he also states that we could lose some of these forests in our lifetime. I see why the author didn’t want to put that in the beginning or ending of the article. Its a bit of a bummer.
