The oldest recorded specimen was 179 years old, but individuals usually live up to 140 years.
I didn’t expect them to have such long lifespans
Bivalves can get very, very old. The shells hold growth information like tree rings so age data can get pretty accurate.
This is one of my fields of research:)
That’s really rad! Present era or paleo stuff?
Both!
The oldest noncolonial animal is believed to be the arctic quahog, which has been confirmed to live 507 years! Older ones are almost surely out there now!
Yeah, I was expecting their lives to be more girthy than long.
I’ll just leave this here.
😭
Second only to these wonderful things
I was thinking more like the fighting artichokes
Please tell me some lucky dude has to put on the artichoke suit during halftime
Yep
This brings much joy. Holy shit.
Go whitefish!
That smile. That damned smile.
Geo-dong amirite?
Gooey-dong. The pronunciation is weird.
I only know of these from Gordon Ramsay shows and he calls it “gooey duck”
Yep. Theres a good number of these things in the PNW, and they are pronounced as you say, Gooey Duck.
Its always hilarious listening to anyone not from the PNW attempting to pronounce the myriad of towns and lakes and such with names from original inhabitants.
Still baffles me that anyone can pronounce Yakima wrong. But then I heard some Californian say Ya kee muh. shakes head
Or Puyallup.

Their school motto is “omnia extares” (“let it all hang out”).

Farmed these for years during and after college. Fun but hard work when you’ve got a body still blessed by youth.
