James Connolly, born on this day in 1868, was an Irish socialist revolutionary, founder of the Irish Citizen Army (ICA), and leader of the Easter Rising rebellion, for which he was executed by the British government.
Connolly was born in a poor Edinburgh neighborhood and spoke with a Scottish accent. He joined the British Army at age 14 to escape poverty and developed a hatred for the institution from firsthand experience. He deserted when his regiment was set to deploy to India.
He was also member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and founder of the Irish Socialist Republican Party. With labor radical James Larkin, he was centrally involved in the Dublin lock-out of 1913, after which the two men formed the Irish Citizen Army (ICA) the same year.
Connolly was opposed to British rule in Ireland and played a leading role in the Easter Rising of 1916, signing the “Proclamation of the Irish Republic” and serving as Commandant of the Dublin Brigade, the regiment that played the most substantial role in the Rising. Connolly was executed by firing squad following the Rising’s defeat.
“If you remove the English army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. England would still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.”
James Connolly

I wanna get into a card game but Legends of Runeterra is dead and Hearthstone and Yugioh have powercrept to absurdity.
Magic seems like the best one out there but idk how much money I’d have to spend to get into it.
Edit: I’ve been watching a lot of the “Hearthstone player rates Magic cards” collabs between Rarran and CovertGoBlue on Youtube and there’s so many interesting Magic cards, man. But a) where do you even begin and b) after being spoiled by Legends of Runeterra’s super generous card acquisition I really don’t wanna be fleeced by Wizards of the Coast.
magic arena can technicyll be played completely free2play if you are willing to play at least like half an hour each day, it’s just going to take a whole lot of time until you can build any kind of real deck (but even that depends entirely on what format you want to play). the game gives you some free starter decks and there’s somewhat frequently events that allow you to use precon decks for free. if you really want to get the most out of it you need to be willing to play draft and sit on your wildcards for a whole long time though. It’s a fun game, but obviously overpriced (no matter if you play it physically or on arena/mtgo) and the constant influx of new cards can be overwhelming.
The correct way to play magic is with a group of friends and using only proxy cards. That is like get a pack of card sleeves and print out inserts to put onto cards so you can infinitely vary the experience. If you find a site selling cheap fakes that is nice as well. The second best way is to set up a group where you all agree to buy prebuilt decks and only a set number of boosters. That gives you the gambling and rarity enjoyment without risking spending too much.
The actually games themselves are usually pretty good. They just don’t justify their price and the gambling aspect is highly problematic.
There are some card games that come in a box and it’s just the cards in the box. There are maybe some xpacs, but you build your deck with just what comes in the box, no buying booster packs or trying to keep up with the latest release.
Hey id check out altered. Doesn’t release retail til September but had the largest kickstarter for a tcg.
Games reminiscent of old gwent if you ever played that. Doing some interesting things with production on demand and 1 of 1 unique cards.
Don’t know how well it’ll populate LGS’ since it’s so crowded rn but I think the games sick and has huge potential.
Nice art as well, reminds me a little bit of riots art style
