    Also, how common is it to run against a sitting president in your own party? I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of that happening before this year.

      I can’t get this answer with a search (buried behind other bullshit); I’d have to check each election, however even a quick search makes it clear that a primary challenge is not unheard of, or even very rare as far as I could tell.

        Wow, I didn’t even know that. I thought it was basically if you’re the sitting president you’re automatically the party candidate for the next race unless you’re on your 2nd term. Looks like someone ran against Clinton in 1996 but they don’t really publicize it much when it happens I guess.
