I’d recommend using an app (I’m using wefwef), and adding the servers you want on here. I added lemmy.world, kbin.social and ofc monyet.cc.

think of it as it’s own little reddit-like server. browse the communities (can toggle All or Local) and subscribe to anything interesting or newsy

here is another tip that should be useful while browsing “all”.

remember to make use of this colored star icon. it brings you to the instance a post originated from (so you won’t see it on local posts).

now, for the explanation of why that is important…the best I can do is by comparison, so if it doesn’t make sense to you, do ask for clarifications.

here it goes…federation on lemmy is like email, sometimes messages don’t get through due to the server being unreachable. lemmy will try to resend those affected comments, but it can’t keep doing so forever.

so if the server remains unreachable for too long, there will be comments that are not synchronized to it. besides that, if you are the first person to subscribe to a remote community, only the original posts are retrieved, new comments will come in as they are posted across the fediverse, but not old ones.

I guess (haven’t really looked for a proof of it) what is guaranteed is you’ll see nested comments in which users from your instance have participated in, but for others you’ll have to keep in mind the possibility of there being comments that could be “missing”.

which brings us to that colored icon, it is available for both original posts and comments. but I think it is more important for posts, if you click on it and see a comment on the source instance that has not synchronized properly to your instance, you can copy the url of the chain/link icon, switch back to your instance, and search for it.

that should force synchronize that particular comment (and its parent comments) over to your instance, and with that you’ll be able to reply to a comment that was originally “missing”. I hope this helps and isn’t overly confusing. for more information, you can have a look at the lemmy documentation.

Hey guys, I just made an account here after hearing that making an account on the lemmy instance nearer your location would improve loading times. It is true loading speeds are great but I am seeing only few of the communities from other instances. For example I can’t find the [email protected] over here on monyet.cc Why is that so?

The federation is quite wonky so you ought to try typing the whole url in the search bar, and try it a few times. First time i do this i tried searching for woodworking on lemmy world, have to try refreshing a few times before it connect.

Iirc someone mentioned that they have to copy the other instance into this server so you could visit it, maybe that’s the reason it couldn’t connect because it hasn’t done copying yet. But once you done so, other people will have easier time visiting that community.

there was a short discussion about the upgrade over here, and based on dcx’s response the admins are planning to upgrade.

what’s not decided yet is whether monyet.cc will wait for lemmy 0.18.1 to be officially released, or jump onto a release candidate like what lemmy.world and quite a number of other instances have done.

when searching for communities, watch out for the couldnt_find_object error, that can mean you’ve got the url syntax wrong, usually (also the error doesn’t appear every time, and I’ve only seen it in the browser not apps, but when it does you should double check the url)

On IG Reel I saw excerpts of an interview with Taylor Swift where she was talking about her songwriting career.

    • She started songwriting at age 12 (she was just learning to play the guitar and her guitar teacher got her into songwriting too)

    • She was the youngest artist ever signed by Sony Music, at age 14.

One more day to the UOB Presale for Singapore Eras concert; 3 more days to general sale and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) release.

Been using wefwef, it’s pretty slick. Very similar to Apollo. Just that lemmy.world, kbin.social and monyet.cc are still quite slow and underpopulated right now so not a lot of content.

I’m using docker, don’t see why ansible wouldn’t work either. You have to install official docker separately into Raspbian.

Yunohost is another option but I think they are using older Lemmy version

thanks for letting me know. I looked on lemmy’s docker hub page, but the latest arm build I could find is one of 0.17.3, does this mean you compiled lemmy from source on your rpi4?

Q to the techies: would link clickthroughs from instances and just fedi in general be recognizable to the web admin of the news sites (for example)? Just thinking how soon before news and public sites notice (esp with twt being on fire, reddit being on its way too, and fb/ig being unnavigable) fedi visits and actually start reorienting themselves.

(It’s so embarassing - I can find Indonesian media, Singaporean media and journalists, Filipino tak payah cakaplah - even their institutions and unis are coming onboard, even Thai news and public sector content in English! But Malaysia… KWSP or khazanah got stock in twitter or what?)

you’re probably thinking of the “referer” http header.

it’s certainly possible that the admins of news sites could be tracking that, but monyet.cc sets a “referer-policy” of “same-origin”, which as far as I know prevents that from leaking to other sites.

kbin.social, on the other hand, doesn’t seem set this policy (but I just looked at the front page, and didn’t investigate further).

Ooo interesting! this is where you can see I’m so outdated - is this the same stuff that used to inform blog pingbacks? Or just about anything in a google site kit dashboard that tracks source of the referral?

pingbacks use a different technology, see the “notification medium” row of the table in this wikipedia page.

as for google site kit, I’m afraid I’m not familiar with that, based on what I could find by googling, I think the answer may be yes (at least, it may be one of the methods used), but you would need someone more familiar with site kit to answer that conclusively.
