Microsoft DOS was not the only DOS, and they had compatibility issues. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is one standard. Mac OS Unix. Ubuntu Linux. Microsoft Windows OS. OS/2 Warp OS. All different, all standardized, often not compatible or interchangeable.
