Raspberry Pi expert Geerling posted a shorter-than-usual video on his YouTube channel yesterday titled ‘They stole my voice with AI.’ In it, he plays a clip from a tutorial video posted on Elecrow’s channel featuring a voice that sounds almost identical to Geerling’s.
He just posted a letter he got. They actually seemed to take the issue seriously including removal and an offer of compensation for any losses.
That’s a refreshing change
The only reason they offered compensation is because he’s well known. How many small time content creators don’t have the fame to cause such a reaction and are left high and dry?
I think unless they have demonstrated bad faith in the past, we should still give them the benefit of the doubt that this was an honest mistake though it raises some other concerns as to what the internal process is for green lighting this when they had worked with Jeff in the past?
Someone did that with Northernlion years ago, but in a friendly experimental way, I think the author asked permission beforehand. Can’t find the OG video, but heres Dan reacting to it: https://youtu.be/O6wZBsIiziI
I don’t see how this is news worthly honestly. This is going to become commonplace with synthetic voices. Even if someone doesn’t intentionally clone a voice chances are it is similar to someone.
