A leak of styrene, a chemical used in plastic and rubber production, was discovered Tuesday afternoon in Whitewater Township, Ohio.
Look at my Secretary of Transportation, Dawg, I’m getting cancer.
Groundhog day
“What is this a follow up to the–oh, this is a different, new derailed train loaded with toxic waste.” - Your brain, engaging with America
“which industrial accident are you talking about?” is going to be the new “which school shooting are you talking about?”
So which “lone wolf with no particular political ideology don’t talk about how 4chan urged him to ‘get the high score’” shot up their school this week?
Not even derailed!
The Toxic Avenger will be from Ohio
But tbf, Ohio was pretty much unlivable before deregulation turned it into a toxic chemical dumpsite.
The city of Gary, Indiana sends congratulations to the state of Ohio for their continued dedication in competition for the “Armpit of the Midwest” award.
Flint, Michigan continues to watch from afar upon its rusting throne, amused by the competition like Shao Khan in Mortal Kombat.
The kids were right about Ohio, no cap.
Only us Yanks could have to worst mix of horrible reliance on trucks and rotten train infrastructure.
But what if the trukkks were zybernetikkk and “self driving” in a janky way?
The incident that was on many residents’ minds following Tuesday’s accident was more recent. In February 2023, a Norfolk Southern railcar carrying toxic chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, setting off fires and leading to a controlled chemical burn of vinyl chloride, a carcinogen. Chemicals released that week spread to 16 states, later research showed. East Palestine is some 300 miles from Whitewater Township.
Following Tuesday’s accident, local residents worried that they wouldn’t get the cleanup help they needed.
“We are Hooven, Ohio,” said Greer, a fourth-generation resident. “They will ignore us.”
on one hand styrene is not that horrible of a chemical, it’s the monomer of polystyrene (Styrofoam) and it polymerizes into Styrofoam pretty fast if you leave it alone
on the other hand jeez that is a lot of styrene. It’s crazy how much plastic we make. The last Ohio spill was vinyl chloride which I assume is the PVC monomer
