Thanks to Delta, a popular iPhone emulator, Nintendo DS fans can soon enjoy online multiplayer support for their favorite retro titles.

On The Verge, Riley Testut revealed the multiplayer functionality leverages melonDS’s online multiplayer code and connects through 3rd-party servers, allowing any Delta user around the world to compete in games like Mario Kart DS as they did back when Nintendo servers were still operational. No official release date has been set yet, but Patreon subscribers will have access to a beta version before it goes public. The service is set for free once available, just like the rest of Delta.

I thought this meant you’d be able to play Mario Kart DS online on your Delta flights.

    “3rd-party servers”

Okay, but what 3rd party? Pretendo Online, I hope. That project deserves some love.

Sweet! I never played DS so I’m curious about what everyone’s favorite games are too. Online play sounds fun. How does that work?

I did some Mario Kart and a some of Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum online battles.

But I generally liked single player games as opposed to party games.

Blue dragon plus, Pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky, radiant historia, the world ends with you, and the legend of Zelda phantom hourglass were all se highlights from my childhood. Phantom hourglass might be kind of hard on emulator though.

That will be fantastic. I have been enjoying Delta, and DS translates surprisingly well to iOS. Having the bottom half of the screen touch sensitive means you never have to reach too far. And the screens on the DS were not too different in size from stacking them on the phone screen. It would be really great to get Mario Kart and Tetris going online.
