Lol forgot to add - kbinauts like Derpy point and me and rakyat (on our kbin accounts) had been replying to monyet posts in the early days lagi. But federation still hinky, that’s why I have alt here. Other masto account holders too I think.

Seems like the chain of events was:

        1. sohkamyung shared article on mastodon
        2. You saw the article on mastodon and shared over here
        3. Weecious commented here
        4. Weecious’s reply appears on my mastodon since I’m subscribed to the channel over there
        5. I boosted her reply on mastodon
        6. sohkamyung saw it and responded on mastodon

That’s the magic of the fediverse hahaha

may be due to the locked account thing mentioned in the profile. so, if you’re not a follower, you can’t dm, and I don’t think lemmy allows you to follow individual users.

I see. Too bad then. This whole fediverse thing is exciting, but so much to learn at the same time.

(next time also, if you see it in a federated location and wanna bring it back here to reply, and this should work, copy the comment ori url (always hosted on their own account) and paste in search bar. When fetched, you can reply :))

this is related to what I posted here, it’s just that now we can do it for mastodon comments as well :-)

at least those comments replying to original posts in lemmy. it would be nice to be able to pull in arbitrary toots to reply to, now that would be interesting!

what you can do now is reply to sohkamyung’s post publicly (if you want to), instead of via dm, then watch in awe as the reply reaches mastodon :-)

Wao nice one guys! Hmmm I think we need to start a moderators discord to coordinate or something lol, lots of things in the air at once.

@acausa, would you be able to add a one-liner cross promotion to lizzie’s Chinese-language megathread, at the top of your state election sticky on r/my? Basically something like this

I think there’s a very good chance this will draw new users here, because Chinese-language users don’t have any reddit-like place to talk elections. (Whereas the english version here is more for our existing users, as it doubles up on the r/my version)

have you considered something (instead of discord) that you can self-host (considering you have a domain name here)?

but if all the mods are already on discord, then never mind.

Hmm. I think most people have a discord these days, yeah. My personal lean is towards conserving “novelty points” for when we absolutely need it, like this site. But good to know we have the option, if Discord starts getting evil and threatening the future of the community etc lol.

Someone asked me if I’m a student. I said yes, and they replied all the best to you. Seems like they’re trying to pitch something. Phew. That’s a narrow escape.

And heh, I can still use the I’m a student card.

feels so bad that my first thought about Hadi when he was hospitalised is if he passed away pas supporters will be going out in droves in the state elections to honour his passing.

has anyone come across lemmit.online? it runs a bot that can cross-post from subreddits (though it only does that for posts, and not comments).

Can someone who has grasped the situation of today Meta joining Fediverse via Threads explain me if it’s a bad thing or a good thing?

Some say it’s bad because Meta can easily access data of all us here on Lemmy/Mastodan/Kbin and our content can appear in their instance which they can monetize it for free.

Some say it’s good because it draws more people to Fediverse and thereby more activity on our instances.

if you have the patience: https://privacy.thenexus.today/should-the-fediverse-welcome-surveillance-capitalism/

this is genuinely a good summary of the implications of Threads, but if you have any questions I can have a crack at it.

On the privacy thing, you have to remember, it’s not apple-to-apple comparison, it’s an apple-to-oranges. what your server needs to have from you in order the service you, is not at all the same as what meta does do as a rule, even as you leave the platforms. AP is quite leaky though, no doubt (i’ve raised this separately on kbin.social), but it’s not the same issue, and is being worked on, because federation means someone is working on a solution somewhere.

but basically the contention is mainly on 3.5 areas:

      • privacy and surveillance - as above
      • market domination of open source standards - ask anyone running their own mailserver these days what’s their rate of success sending anything to gmail or Office365 addresses (a lot of my work involve african IP addresses and institutions and they really kena)
      • the protection of minority groups, both from infra pov as well as modding pov - meta famously do not give a shit; many ppl in fedi are from minority identities (2017-18 wave for example got onto mastodon because it was available as trolls attacking queer ppl got worse on twitter). infra pov is related to the privacy question; but smaller instances at least can jaga their members better and boot out haters and defederate from instances who won’t control their members. this is the modding pov that is a critical difference from meta, which brings us to point 3.5
      • capacity - small instances like this for example, got admin and mods who need to sleep. if trolls coming from diff timezones, how? belum lagi touch on traffic capacity issue.
