Don’t think it won’t happen to you. When the incoming wave of Ukrainian refugees hits Europe, the populists that have already been growing in popularity will make their move. With the U.S. fallen, a lot of money and attention has been freed up to destabilize other countries.

It’s happening in Italy. It’s happening in the Netherlands. It’s happening in France. If you think you are ready for it, remember that we thought the same.

Don’t blame it on populism. Populism is just people objecting to the ruling elite and a rigged economy. It’s right wing populism that always gets paired with nationalism and xenophobia to breed fascism. Left wing populists don’t have the same tendency.

That’s fair. I short-handed because I’m only familiar with the right wing populist parties that are currently rising in popularity, so I figured the right wing part was implied. Are there any left wing populist parties rising right now in Europe?

Aside from being aware of the rightward motion I’m not really well versed on European politics. The best we have in the US is the Working Family’s party that primarily works within the Democratic party because of our two party system.

I know Spain has done some interesting things with restructuring corporations to put workers in charge. I’m not familiar with the political landscape that made that possible.

Huge numbers of Ukrainian refugees in Europe already. They’re doing pretty well and integrate quickly

Yeah but there was still hope that Ukraine could win the war. Now, we will basically need a mass evacuation, because the U.S. isn’t just going to stop support. Russia is going to start receiving a bunch of classified intelligence about Ukrainian positions, they’ll have far easier access to funds, hell Trump might just start selling them weapons.

Things have been bad, they are going to get catastrophic. While Ukrainians have been integrating pretty well, there are also a lot of far-right populists in Europe who are beginning to use them as scapegoats. These groups are probably Russian-backed, and again, they’ll have more money. They will capitalize on the influx of refugees with more hateful rhetoric.

I think very many Americans leftists would love to hear some survival tips and advice from European leftists, particularly those in Italy who’ve been living under Meloni and before that Berlusconi for decades. How do you get through the day?
