Just going over the various recent posts, most of them are from brand new accounts that then get deleted. Many of them are from people saying they’re from foreign countries yet the OP speaks perfect English. In one case I mentioned that the username was the same as a Reddit/Instagram user…

Hell, the most recent one (Kazak person that was kidnapped)? They were taught Kazak and English by their kidnapper? Kazak and Russian sure, but English? I call bullshit.

There’s a lot of fake everything.

I recently saw a pair of AITA posts with nearly identical stories, just with the genders reversed. It was a transparent attempt to gather data on gender differences when it comes to relationship advice.

Nothing is real. These are just words on a screen.

Oh man, on Reddit that was a classic and usually just done so people could point out people’s hypocrisy (no data gathering goal).

But Reddit caught on eventually and unified the advice.

        Lawyer up, hit the gym.

Yeah I replied to one yesterday and my bs detector was going off a bit. Feels like I’m back on Reddit again, lol

Thanks for posting this. I think you’re right. I was getting bad-reddit-like vibes from the recent AMA posts. One thing I like about the fediverse is how real posts and comments are (compared to corporate-controlled social media)

Roleplaying isn’t unique to Reddit. I feel like we should have people post a picture with their username on it, but turns out that AI can fake that too nowadays.

I don’t really know of any solution to ensure posted content is as truthful as possible, to be honest.

Some people need to hide their identity and post on a throwaway, though. This would mean those people won’t post anymore, and they can be genuine.

Don’t believe what you see online. It’s that simple.

Even with theoretical identity verification, people still lie. I swear it’s like the social media turns peoples gullibility to 100%.

Everyone online has some odd propensity to want internet stories to be real. Even doing mental gymnastics to believe it. Maybe pointing that out can remove its power.
