    The separatists were primarily middle rim worlds who were slightly less rich and influential than the inner rim worlds but we’re still empowered and enriched by the existing power structures, as opposed to outer rim worlds which continued to be isolated or exploited before, during and after the clone wars, imperial rule and the galactic rebellion. So it was sort of like if modern Eastern European liberal democracies went to war with the major Western European countries over to what degree of autonomy they got to exercise while still exploiting the global south.

      Core of CIS were most of biggest interstellar megacorpos from various branches, just look at the names:

      • Commerce Guild (huge cartel producing and selling everything from food to capital ships)
      • Corporate Alliance (another huge cartel comparable to the above)
      • InterGalactic Banking Clan (basically FED but on galactic scale)
      • Retail Caucus (another cartel, slightly smaller than two above ones)
      • Techno Union (another cartel, biggest producer of ships and droids in galaxy, interestingly it played both sides during the Clone Wars, some of its members sold weapons to Republic and some for CIS)
      • And of course last but not least Trade Federation, sort of East India Company

      Seriously the only big scummy corpo missing from that list is Czerka, but Czerka was part of the Old Republic era and only recently made to new canon, so there is just one book mentioning it in 40 BBY as still immensely powerful corporation with galactic range, but since it’s a fairly new book all the previous lore miss it.

      Of course except those there were dozens of thousands other organizations, groups, corporations, governments and other entities, a lot of them with genuine grievances towards Republic imperialism, but most of them were not even named and described and those that were, were usually used by CIS as cannon fodder or distraction.

      So CIS was in essence, a group of immensely powerful Porkys that were tired with government slightly restricting their exploitation and rebelled to basically became government and reach the highest state of capitalism.
