I’m looking to replace my sff J5040 Wyze machine. Its still plenty fast enough, but storage has become an issue with its limited USB endpoint availability of ~50 device limit.

I know that just switching it up to a newer Intel system could give me double the endpoints because of the two XHCI chip setup, but I was thinking that if I’m going to replace it, I’d like to not limit myself.

As such, even though Ryzen is far faster than I need, it does now support USB4. Does anyone know if the switch to USB4 would give the system a larger address range and have more than 127 USB devices or is that limitation still in place and I might as well not waste my money?

Citation please? The spec is fine with it, its just Intel that put in artificial limitations.

I never said it wasn’t possible. It just is not a good idea.

You want proper SAS as that is a interface that is designed to talk to drives. USB is not optimized for that and it comes with some overhead. The biggest issue with USB is that the addressing is easy to screw up. Devices may disconnect and reconnect at random which is normally part of USB. However, this will cause ZFS to panic as it sees this as a hardware problem.

A glass may have a spec that allows it to be filled to the brim. Doesn’t mean it’s a good idea, especially when you want to run up stairs with it.

Your going to spill water everywhere.
