Of course it works … the problem for corporations and all consuming controlling governments who want to control populations is that they are afraid of what people will think or do in their spare time. Problems for the owning and controlling class arise when large portions of the population have extra days to sit around and consider why things are the way they are in society.

      So true.

I’ve watched multiple family members retire and only then start asking questions about the society they grew up in. But not too hard, cuz they’re old and tired and very much set in their ways. My father refuses to believe there’s any better way to do things than the way we currently do them, despite me pointing out that at one point it was normal for children to work 12 hour shifts, so obviously things can change for the better.

Both my parents worked from the time they were in high school to the time they retired. Unbroken. Never got to explore. Just plugged into the system the entire time. Neither one of them know what to do with themselves now because they never had hobbies. Go to work. Come home. Take care of kid. Go to sleep. Repeat.

I’ve been through a few periods of unemployment and I learned so much during those periods. In so many ways. Things I would absolutely not had time for if I was pounding out 40+ hours a week. I remember during a summer I was unemployed and had no money to spare, so every day I would just grab a book and bike to the river and lay on the beach and read. It was amazing. We all need more time for things like that. Or you know, actually raising our kids instead of hoping the system does it for us while we’re at work.

Do you reckon this is why many people die not long after retirement…cause they basically shut down and don’t know what to do with themselves?

It’s sad, and should be acknowledged.

As long as the government takes care of some basic things, people aren’t constantly reminded that they need to spend every waking minute to fuel the next demonstration, riot, revolution, uprising, resistance, civil war etc. Those governments that don’t do a good job, need to be constantly worried about these things.

When people are happy, they will just spend the extra day with friends and family, fishing, flying a kite, hiking in the woods or whatever. Alternatively, you can totally just play dayz with your friends, and shoot some zombies all day long.

It’s even more basic than that. I’m convinced its just a matter of controlling food. Every major revolution in history is most commonly initiated because people were just starving to death. They had no choice, either die starving or die trying to overturn the system … so many people opted to just try fighting because they knew they were going to die anyways. They literally fought for the next generation of people after them.

The dynamics are the same today but the ruling class know the lessons of the past so they control the food supply. They make food readily available and within the reach of everyone so no one ever truly is able to starve, at the very least no large segments of the population starves. This also isn’t to say that everyone eats like kings either … just enough food is made available and affordable to keep people from rioting. It’s also the population at play too … most of civilization will put up with shitty quality food, lack of food, low food supplies and inadequate food supplies for long periods of time before (or even if) they revolt.

It all doesn’t mean that people are happy or content … they just aren’t starving … as long as you keep them from starving, chances are high that they won’t have enough motivation to want anything to change.

The risk of starvation isn’t the only way to get there, but people who have little to lose in trying to change things are motivated to try. “The alternative is starving” is a really quick way to get there.

Americans can’t even get on the same page about objective reality. We’re NEVER going to have this. It requires the populace to be in solidarity to demand the change. That’s simply not going to happen in America.

I’m really surprised it’s not four ten hour shifts. If you want to pay me for five days while i work for four regular shifts, hell yeah I’ll be a good productive mood.

I mean, that’s kind of the point, right? Workers that are well rested tend to be more productive, so 4 10s kind of defeats the purpose of the 4 day week - notwithstanding that you do get the extra day off, you’re that much more burnt out because you had even less time to take care of yourself the preceding 4 days.
