U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he wants his country to take ownership of the Gaza Strip and redevelop it after Palestinians are displaced elsewhere.

“We will own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site,” Trump said at the start of a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“I do see a long-term ownership position,” Trump said when asked about the U.S. controlling the territory for an extended period, adding that he is not ruling out sending U.S. troops in to secure Gaza.

Trump’s comments came hours after he suggested that displaced Palestinians in Gaza be “permanently” resettled outside the war-torn territory.

“You can’t live in Gaza right now. I think we need another location,” Trump said earlier Tuesday.

“I think it should be a location that’s going to make people happy. You look over the decades, it’s all death in Gaza. This has been happening for years. It’s all death. If we can get a beautiful area to resettle people, permanently, in nice homes where they can be happy and not be shot and not be killed and not be knifed to death like what’s happening in Gaza.”

Trump has previously called on Jordan, Egypt and other Arab countries to take in Palestinians temporarily while Gaza is reconstructed after the devastating war between Hamas and Israel, which was paused in January by a ceasefire. Tuesday was the first time he has publicly floated making that resettlement permanent.

This is so fucking stupid that I had to check other sources on what he said, to confirm it. (It does.)

No, it is not just immoral, it’s also fucking stupid. Why would he get the Palestinians or the State of Israel pissed, if he can get both pissed at the same time? The State of Israel doesn’t see those lands as belonging to some banana maize republic dammit, it sees those lands as belonging to itself.

inb4: “but Netanyahu said he was thinking outside the box with fresh ideas! That it’s unconventional thinking!”. Well, his reply is superficially polite (likely to avoid the offend the other Nazi’s precious-oh-so-precious ego), but it’s non-committing and can be easily understood as “this is crazy talk”.

It gets worse. So far the State of Israel has been trying to masquerade the genocide against Palestinians as a self-defence war. Now with Trump suggesting ethnic genocide, more people will ask “wait a minute… isn’t that what Israel is doing already?” (Yes, it is.)

Thank goodness the literal heroes who refused to vote for Harris prevented this.

So brave. So admirable. So incredibly thoughtful. What foresight.

I really want to know what all those folks on Lemmy that didn’t vote for Kamala because Biden wasn’t doing enough for Gaza think of this. We warned you.

“Everybody I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land.”

This would be comical if it weren’t so inhumane. “Everybody” is the last person he’s spoken to, ie Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Forced displacement of Gaza’s population would likely be a violation of international law […]

Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, the former Israeli defence minister, have been issued arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Would the ICC investigate Trump as well if he take action and tries to take over Gaza?

“Everybody I’ve spoken to loves the idea of [mad shit]” can also be understood as “I’ve surrounded myself with sycophants”.

He just pulled the US out of the UN Human Rights Commission.

He may actually be nuts enough to just pull us out of the UN and tell them to build a new HQ somewhere outside of New York, and turn the UN building into a fucking Trump tower.

Would the ICC investigate Trump as well if he take action and tries to take over Gaza?

      Maybe?

If they do, he’ll just laugh like Andrew Jackson and say ‘lets see you enforce it’.

If somebody tries to, he’ll follow along with existing US Law / Policy eatablished in 2002 under Bush, and threaten to or perhaps actually invade Belgium and the Hague, and go to war with the rest of NATO.

He’s nut, alright. Let’s hope the USA has enough checks and balances, and some sane people left, to avoid the worse.

          Sorry, genuine question:

          He’s nut.

Does that mean He’s nutty, He’s crazy, He’s bonkers, He’s lost his mind?

          Or was that a typo?

I’m 35 and I’ve never heard anyone say ‘He’s nut’ before.

I’d say never get old as a joke but uh… yeah, looks like all our probalistic life expectancies are dropping rapidly.

It’s probably a typo of “he’s a nut.” Which, yes, your interpretation in paragraph two is correct.
