Got myself this to test the tools I had at hand and get to grips with the assembly of one of these things.

Got an RG Nu Gundam in the wing waiting to benefit from all the stuff I learned making this little guy.

Gotta say, I’m in a weird place with this model. One one hand I’m blown away by the complexity of the parts and the logic of it all. On the other hand, the lack of an internal frame means a lot of stuff is hanging off one tiny peg and things drop off this dude at the slightest provocation.

Looks awesome. Have you considered sanding and possibly panel lining? It really adds the extra finish to the base kit and the materials are pretty cheap to get.

HG kits are never really going to have internal skeletons. MG kits have the internal frame you’re talking about, maybe look into getting one of those.

Oh yeah, that was my understanding of MG from the start. And I thought to myself, “Ag, it’ll be okay.” And it wasn’t 🤣

I’m definitely gonna use this guy as a guinea pig for experimenting with everything from panel scribing to painting. He’s in for a hell of a ride, this poor boy.

Do you have an MG you’d specifically like to recommend?

I will always recommend the MGSD kits for people. They are fantastic builds and highly articulated. As far as regular MG kits, some of the ones I’ve enjoyed are Freedom 2.0, Jesta, Dynames, Aile Strike, and Barbatos. There’s also the FM (Full Mechanics) Aerial. She’s a simpler build than most MG kits, but still very detailed and a good experience.

Yea, smart! I did the same with 3 HG kits and I’ll be learning how to paint on them soon. And then going through a giant back log of MG kits that’s I’ve bought. Any of the Ka. kits are pretty awesome if you find a suit you like in that line I would recommend getting on when you’re ready for a really nice model.

There’s soooooooo many awesome ones! F90 and 91 are pretty easy builds that look cool, Victory V2 and Nu are fun builds, but can feel a bit delicate at times during assembly. The Dom feels like building a big ole HG that looks better. Tallgeese is another easy build, but I definitely recommend an Action Base for it. The joints are a bit stiff and he’s a bit too heavy. I would say if you get a Ver Ka MG, to be mindful that those kits can push the limits of the plastic. I discovered this when I panel lined my Crossbones and some the flaps on the core fighter immediately showed cracks that just sucked up all the ink. Don’t get me wrong though, the kits look great, but some can be delicate during and after building.

    Welcome! Glad you’re having fun.

In regards to your concerns, the HG Unicorn is known for having some jank to it. Definitely not one I’d recommend as a starter kit. (Actually, I could say that about every grade of Unicorn: the original MG is also full of jank (it’s a complex design overall), the RG has breakage points in the premolded inner frame that can ruin your day if you’re not prepared for them, and the MGEX and PG simply aren’t starter kits lol.) I know the kits are advertised as snap fit, but if the part is unarticulated and keeps falling off, a little dab of glue will do the trick just fine.

The good news is that RG Nu is a fantastic kit. Looking forward to seeing the results!

Right! Thanks. Yes, I’m gonna go into this guy’s guts, get right in there, and start trying to fix the articulation issues like the floppy neck and all that. The super glue idea is a great one. I’ve seen people using all sorts of stuff, but super glue I have at hand right now.

      High five. Good advice.
