Uniqueness 1 in a MillionThis is actually the first time I’m going to say: it’s a badly-formulated puzzle. I found a solution in which all 16 words could be grouped into 4 groups of 4 believably, and when I entered my first guess, it gave me “one away”.

Hot sauce, butter, syrup, milk: things you put on other food
Guts, jam, tea, beans: metaphors for gossip/truth telling.
Pickle, freeze, ferment, can: ways of preserving food.
Grate, grind, scrape, gnash: rubbing teeth together.
I entered the gossip one, and it was one away. I think also tried swapping jam for milk to change it to “spill the _____”. Not even one away.
The definition of a badly-formulated connections puzzle is when there are multiple viable complete solutions. Frequently people complain about how they found one category that worked but wasn’t right, but usually theirs wouldn’t work with the other 3 categories. IMO that’s not what happened today.

Pedantically speaking, the process is called jellying, so the clue would need to be [JELLY] not [JAM] for that grouping to work. The real kicker is that blue wouldn’t work with any of the remaining clues, unless you consider [PICKLE] a breakfast topping.
Huh, going down that line of thought, one could make the argument that blue would still work in that combination, albeit as sandwich toppings instead of breakfast: [PICKLE] [HOT SAUCE] [BUTTER] [SYRUP]. Before anyone calls foul on [SYRUP] for this grouping, it goes on Monte Cristos and chicken & waffle sandwiches. This one might be the closest argument I’ve seen for an alternate solution. The previous pedantry proves pivotal for properly parrying the proposed protest.
Who the hell eats hot sauce for breakfast???

Was SO stuck on a “toast topping” category. Jam, beans, syrup, butter. Or was it hot sauce? Then it clicked with beans and tea, and
purpleblue wasn’t even explicitly for toast lmfaoHeey… I think I’m getting the hang of this.
