I’m an AMD fan, but I feel like Pat was on the right track. Intel’s troubles came from putting lawyers and accountants in charge of the company. Pat (an engineer) is what they really needed at the time.
Pat ain’t perfect, but I think he was on the right track overall. Fix the the CPU issues, and do more R&D on GPUs.
Your products don’t have to be cutting edge, but they must be rock solid and reliable. Once that is dialed in, then push towards the cutting edge.
I also think it is imperative to keep the foundry business. Now that we are completely fucked six ways from Sunday, having a working domestic foundry, particularly one integrated directly with a chip designer, is insanely valuable.
