what does unlocking mean?
Disappointed to see Fairphone in the shit category.
TBF, having to wait a bit isn’t the end of the world. That said, it shouldn’t be locked down at all.
Well problem is they retain a control of the unlocking and can change the rules any time (like Xiaomi and others).
Still mad at Asus for what they did to the bootloader unlock. Terrible terrible company making terrible phones with terrible software. Definitely won’t go back to zenfones ever again
I’m sad there are so few options for headphone jacks and/or small phones. I went with a zenfone 10 because it and xperia devices seemed like the only options, and the Zenfone seemed to suit my needs better, but it means I’ll have to wait to try any custom ROMs.
And unfortunately, I’m still hoping to make this phone last a long time. We’ll see how long I can keep it going
Damn I thought zenphones were nice :(
It was a terrible experience, every software update broke an important feature, without exception. For example, once, casting was broken for 2-3 months. The Zenfone 8 also had issues with the phone randomly bricking itself with no way to recover (hardware defect that affected the batches from 2021-04 to 2021-05) without ever issuing a statement or recall, they just did warranty replacements. Then there’s the phone itself, it’s okay I guess, but the cameras kinda suck and the display is calibrated like shit with various color shifts when changing the brightness and refresh rate modes. Also back to the software, you get 2 years, and during that second year, you get an update every 2 months. And not to forget that their oem app quality is dogshit and looks and feels like they are from 2015.
So basically the Zenfone’s only selling point/reason to get one was the small size from the 8 to 10. But now they’ve essentially gotten rid of it, so you’re left with a generic phone that has shit updates, shit customer support, potentially shit hardware, shit software quality, and that can no longer be bootloader unlocked, even though they promised multiple times that bootloader unlock was coming back soon™️ (they said that in 2023)
Never again, Asus
Damn, this makes me happy I went with Sony. It was expensive, but a great phone all around
Very useful list, might unlock my Galaxy S22 now that I’m getting a Nothing phone.
Very good resource. Will refer to it in the future. I made a mistake of buying an expensive xiaomi phone on the grounds that it should be unlockable… Not really. The hoops I had to jump through were designed to be non-jump-through-able. I unlocked it after more then three months of trying, via unofficial exploit.
I want a company to have official Lineage OS support at launch or close to launch. It would be so cool if a company ported there device to Lineage OS instead of random community members doing the work.
That already happened with CyanogenMod, which LineageOS is forked from. It was a massive clusterfuck, and is the reason LineageOS exists today.
Ahh CyanogenMod, that brings back good memories of installing that to get Android 2.3 on my old HTC Incredible S. Even managed to get that thing running Android 4.0, although it was quite glitchy.
Phones used to be fun god damn it, now they’re all locked down and boring.
They’ve certainly plateaued, that’s for sure. I still have an original Pixel XL, and a Nexus 6P. Aside from the screen size and overall battery life, not a whole lot has changed.
The 6P was an amazing phone, my 2nd favorite behind the Pixel 2 XL. I just want my rear finger print scanner, so much better than the in screen ones.
It was the perfect phone, if it wasn’t for that goddamn Snapdragon 810…
I got a Samsung phone (not from usa) and there is a 50/50 it can be unlocked, but the hardware on this phone is great so hopefully someone will make a rom for it and i can easily unlock it.
The issue with samsung devices is Knox. Once unlocked you cannot relock it and use all features such as mobile wallet.

ohh yeah true, there is a project re-enabling the features but not everything and requires root.
I’m eyeing a S23 or S23+. The phone is relatively compact and the CPU is powerful.
I’ll see if it can be unlocked. That would be the only reason I would consider a Pixel at this point.
I was loyal to samsung till I bought the S9 and couldn’t throw a custom rom on it. So I reluctantly bought a pixel and put grapheneOS on it the second i bought it. Hands down the best android experience i have ever had. I have complete control over what the apps do, what sensors and directory’s they have access to and whether they have google services or not. Sanboxing is great. Buffer overflow protection, security focused updates regularly.
I wish fairphone’s hardware was up to the security standards of gOS. I really wanted one of those but im extremely happy with the pixel overall.
Saw it posted in another thread, probably interesting as its own post
Great! This is a list I was looking for, due to my phone slowly dying.
So… Many…
