Don't forget to read the making-of for more details about the demo!
Which model of the CPC did this run on? Reading the wiki it seems like it had a longer life than I remembered.
From the video it’s running on a CPC 6128 — IIRC (40 years ago, now) the original 1984 model, the 464, was 64kB RAM and a tape deck (which is what I had) and then the 664 came out the next year with 64kB and a built in 3" disc drive, and then the 6128 was almost straight after with 128kB RAM and disc drive.
Otherwise there wasn’t really any notable difference in the internals — 4MHz Z80 that was effectively slowed down by the video hardware.
Cool demo! I tried a few things like this but I was 12 or 13 at the time and upgraded to an Atari ST in ~1987 so never really got that deep into it. Had to teach myself Z80 assembly and figure out how to program the video memory first, and information was kind of hard to come by back then :D
Edit: just noticed your username… were you an ST kid too?
Indeed I was. Started on the Dragon 32 (6809 based) but really got into assembly on the Atari ST. We (a few school friends and I) released a couple of mediocre sample demos back in the day before scattering to write a few demo screens in other places.
Nice! Just looked you guys up on Pouet, and although I definitely remember the name from back then I don’t really recall having seen any of the demos unfortunately.
This is most of my crap FWIW. A few mediocre sample demos of my own in there :D
