Are there some games you like, but it didn’t get much attention or weren’t well received by critics? I play a lot of those games and of couse there are flaws in some of them, but i still had fun playing them.

Here are a few that came to my mind:

  • Magical Starsign: One of the game i had a lot fun while playing it was magical Starsign. I played it on the NDS, so it was for quite a while, but i haven’t seen anyone mentioned that game online. Maybe it isn’t that good, i don’t know anymore, but i just had fun playing the game. I think it’s a simple turn based game with some element, so nothing specail, but i like the character design.

  • I understand if you don’t like the last year released Valkyrie Elysium, it could be another Valkyrie Profile game but it’s only another action rpg. And yes the game has a horrible story, not like the other games of that franchise…but still i had fun playing it. Maybe mostly because of the battle system. It has a fast pased action battle system with perfect dodge and parry, so far quite normal. But i think the summoning of the Einhernjar is is better solved than other games and their auto battle party. And i like to fight against the bosses especialy the final boss (play the final boss so much).

  • God wars future past: for this i understand that there are a lot better tactical rpg’s. But maybe i just played it on the perfect time to enjoy it. I think it is more or less like final fantasy tactics. I’m sure i startet the game because of the artstyle, but i end of like it because i don’t know i guess fun playing it.

Destiny of an Emperor was one I really liked that still doesn’t get talked about much. An NES game, it has some particularly dated gameplay now, especially in the dungeons. Yet it has that great Capcom sound, and a neat take on an abstraction of armies colliding with turn based gameplay and HP.

For critical reception, it still blows my mind that the original Rune Factory 4 had a metascore under 80. The game has piles more content than Stardew Valley does, a better on-boarding system, etc.

I love Magical Starsign! I really like the characters and the overall story. The different planets are interesting and I quite like the planet cycles to boost certain elements. The battle system is simple but fun. I’ve always wanted to finish the secret challenge dungeon but never got to it. And it’s a shame they messed up the putty pea side quest, since there are not enough of them in the game if I remember correctly.

Other than that, I absolutely love The Last Remnant. Its got a lot of flaws, but I’m always drawn back to it one way or another. The game did get some attention, but its not well remembered by most.

Lastly, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and its two sequels for the Nintendo DS “Ring of Fate” and “Echoes of Time”. The first one did get a re-release on the switch, but it also got a lot of negative attention. I’ve never heard anyone ever talk about the DS ones though. They are really good action RPGs with a nice story and crafting system. You’re always crafting some new weapons and armor from monster material. If you’re into that, I highly recommend them.

I own The Last Remnant Remaster und ich even started the game. I can’t say much about it, mayb i will play it some day, but at least i think the battle system looks kind of unique. Always like to get into kind of weird battle system (looking at you resonance of fate). But i wouldn’t say the game looked good enough at the time to play it long. The reason wasn’t it looked so bad, maybe a bit. I just decide to start another game. I just dedicded to start edge of eternity (which i haven’t finished as well 😭 )

I finished the game 3 times throughout my life, which is unusal for me. And every single time, towards the end I thought to myself: “Oh! Now I understand. Gotta play this again sometime and do things ‘right’!”. There is something satisfying enough about the core loop to actually play it over and over again.
