I won’t claim to know the full history of this style of jackets that don’t close but have decorative buttons – But it is the style for white-tie tailcoats as well. As I understand it they are indirectly descended from horse-riding fashion.

As for the amount of ornamentation – These are going for like, a _goth style. In the designer’s site you can see they also do like, more traditional style suits.
