      They outsourced their labor to an untrained, unpaid, external individual that has zero incentive to do the job correctly. They can’t act all shocked Pikachu when costly mistakes are made.

        Act being the operative word. They still know a bit of theft is cheaper than another employee, so they keep the self-checkouts open. If they can lobby for stronger loss prevention abilities in the process even better.

        I’m actually surprised they haven’t added a fee to using the remaining staffed tills yet.
