Talk a lot about early final fantasy games. But to be fair, was for me more or less the same.

It’s always interesting to me to hear the enthusiasm over the fifth console generation because I mostly hated it. I grew up in the 8-bit and 16-bit era, and especially as a PC gamer, I thought it was a generation too early to be making the leap to 3D. I suspected we would get what I still feel like we got–a bunch of ugly, un-textured 3D as the industry went through the growing pains of new technology. Games with gorgeous, intricate sprite art like Final Fantasy Tactics and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night made me bitter about losing almost an entire generation of 2D games right when they were getting good.

I did like Final Fantasy VII, but I was sorely disappointed by FF8 and 9, enough so to make me start branching out when almost all I knew of JRPGs were Square products. That’s how I remember the PS1–disappointment salvaged a bit by turning that into the opportunity to seek out and find games like Suikoden and Valkyrie Profile.

How do you feel now that we’re getting new, really stunning pixel games like stawdew Valley and shovel knight? I personally am thrilled and love the comeback.

My favorite thing about the rise of indie games is that it does feel like I’m getting some of that back that I felt was lost with the early move to 3D.

That said, I’m not necessarily into the pixel aesthetic; I want smooth, detailed art. I think Hollow Knight is one of the best-looking games I’ve ever seen, and I also loved stuff like Darkest Dungeon and Hades. I enjoyed Stardew Valley and Shovel Knight (possibly because they were direct analogues to early Story of Seasons and Mega Man), but stuff like Hyper Light Drifter and Lunark are not for me.

In JRPGs, I’m really looking forward to Unicorn Overlord and Eiyuden Chronicle.
