I am wanting to spin up an Active Directory instance and have some fake users, just to practice working in it and get a deeper understanding.
Would you set up a VM with Windows or Linux?
Create a Csv of fake users data to import?
I just feel like it won’t be that useful since I don’t have any real world applications for it besides what I do at work so how can I take advantage of AD’s uses if I don’t have real users and groups.

Just make up some users and groups. The labs I’ve done in college haven’t had the hundreds of thousands of users that you would encounter in a real enterprise, but they still taught me all about rights, permissions, group policy, and most other features of Windows Server and ADDS.
