    Except the influence of parents wanes around the teenage years, when they begin to assert their identity against yours.

    What you teach your children before then sets the stage for how they’ll treat you during and after their teenage years, their most mentally formative years. Teaching them to ignore pronouns when they’re young will pre-emptively alienate them from you when they end up wanting to use those pronouns, trying them on as teenager who don’t know who they are do. And then you’ll wonder why your growing child comes with increasing distance.

    And all you had to be is a supportive, understanding parent.
