Just tried Steam for Mac the other day, and there is a very good reason why it’s so low. Modern macs don’t even let you play games made for Mac!! Since 32-bit support was dropped, you pretty much can’t play any Source games like HL2 or Gmod.
Yeah, most of my games don’t work on macOS (I think ~1/4 do?), and most of my games do work on Linux (>3/4). So I don’t use my Mac (work computer, my boss is cool with it) for gaming and instead use Linux.
According to these new numbers from Valve, the Linux customer base is up to 1.96%, or a 0.52% jump over June! That’s a huge jump with normally just moving 0.1% or so in either direction most months…
so I assume it was at 1.44% in June, which means… like a 35% increase?
There was a pretty big dip a 1 or 2 months ago, so I would just classify this as being margin of error, especially with such small percentages
I’m one of these stats, I switched to Linux as a daily driver on my gaming setup a few months ago. I kept the windows drive installed in the box, but it’s way more lonely than I thought it would be.
The Steam Deck is the biggest contributor to this number. According to the article, 42% of Linux users on Steam are Deck users.
I hate to say it, but the only thing that can explain this kind of sudden jump is error in data.
