I use Notepad on my work computer daily. I never save any documents, but it is handy for a quick copy/paste of info I need for a short period of time. We aren’t allowed to install anything on the computers, so it’s what is available.
I could live without it, but I do find it marginally useful, basically as digital “scrap paper”.
These aren’t “tech related” problems, they are “windows is shit and abusive to the user” problems.
I mean, Grandma ain’t cleaning up the myriad of shit windows leaves clogging drives either… I see the real problem is going to be the average $12/hr geek squad agent isn’t going to be able to fix it for Grandma no matter how eager she is to pay $199.

I personally love Alexandrite.app as a UX. I’m so used to it that I get confused when I follow a link and see a default Lemmy instance, lol.
My laptop has a 3050 in it running Garuda Linux under Wayland and its been working well without any fuss. I tried bazzite but the drivers put me on the struggle bus… It never would leave “hybrid mode” and trying to play a game just wouldn’t touch the dgpu so performance would be igpu trash mode.
I’d love to know what is different between garuda and bazzite to try to get bazzite to work as I did really like it, but it eluded me. I guess my point is that you might have better luck trying a different distro unfortunately. It feels like there are enough variables that what works for me may not for you and vice versa.

a lot of industrial software that digs it’s fingers deep into windows subsystems that wine does not support. Even popular commercial, like adobe, cannot run on wine correctly
I’d be more inclined to believe that these things are so difficult (nearly impossible) to get to work under wine due to some eldritch connection deep into the bowels of windows subsystems so old that current devs don’t even know what they do… IF it weren’t for the fact that a lot of them have fully functioning MacOS versions out there running. Maybe I’m a conspiracy theorist, but I fully believe a LOT of these big commercial software companies are ACTIVELY working to fight their own software being compatible with Wine - actively spending time, money, and effort to block Linux compatibility (completely negating the usual answer of “it’s too expensive to support Linux when so few customers use Linux”).
Unless you are specifying a custom filepath for each file, in which case, carry on.
This one is correct. I always setup my browser to ask where to put each download, and then send it to the file it needs to live in. Usually have the “default” be the home folder so I can easily browse to the subsequent folder quickly. The browser doesn’t just get to decide where to put stuff or it would all be a mess eventually anyway.
Neither of them are actually a legal requirement. What is offered is basically part of the “compensation package” (it’s considered part of your pay) in the US. Also there are A LOT of jobs in the US that don’t give paid sick time or vacation time, they are usually pretty far down the hierarchy though, and the jobs that do give paid time off typically don’t give it to you until you have been employed there for at least a year.
I don’t think this graphic is stating you cannot get any of these things in the US, but none of these things are guaranteed by the government.
I definitely would go ahead and put the printed document directly into a hanging file in my desk drawer if I could read/use the document without ever moving it like I can on a computer…

Absolutely wild. Pretending to faint because a company sells hardware running on Linux? I feel like most of us want to be able to buy more computers that don’t just automatically come with Windows… That person sucks.
I didn’t know that… That’s even worse. It is probably a company already setup to share data with Texas officials for the purpose of oppression.
These states didn’t block pornhub, pornhub blocked these states. Those states passed laws that would require legitimately operated adult sites to check ID at entry and then worry about keeping that information secure against breaches. This is more likely step 1 for those states to taking legal action against websites they deem are “adult oriented” for mentioning Queer people existing and not checking ID first.

I agree. I don’t think I’ve ever actually received or witnessed the hate that the memes espouse as the norm in the Linux community. I’ve seen some “oh really, I had trouble with that so I use blank instead” or maybe even “you should try blank” (mostly when people ask though). I think most of us are too busy hating Windows to really truly hate other linux distros. We have our favorites and we will happily share that with anyone that asks, and many that don’t.
I’ve tried to stop talking about it all the time to friends and family as I don’t want to scare them off, but I am just using it everyday in front of them and showing them that I don’t have infinitely more problems than they do… Hoping it just seeps in via osmosis and at some point one too many “hey, you should buy a new computer, windows 10 is going end of life soon you know” pop-ups will set off that magical chain reaction.
I’ve been using that for ages to share my screen, but it doesn’t bring over the audio which can be annoying, but otherwise works great. I am sure there are ways to get the audio into it, but it felt like it would be more trouble than it was worth.
Same! I’ve got over 200 hours in so far. It scratches that itch so well.
How does this stop them from just going to the website? Like, am I just too old or too computer literate or something to “get it”? These all exist outside of apps…
